Yemen officials say 7 Saudi militants killed

SANAA, Yemen — At least seven suspected militants from Saudi Arabia were among the alleged al-Qaida members killed in Yemen in a recent wave of U.S. drone strikes, senior Yemeni officials said Friday, suggesting that Saudis are increasingly crossing the border to carry funds or seek terrorist training.

Since July 27, drone attacks in Yemen’s southern and central provinces have killed a total of 34 militants suspected of being members of the country’s al-Qaida branch, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, security officials have said.

On Thursday alone, the officials said U.S. drones conducted three airstrikes, killing 12 militants.

Mexican drug lord freed after 28 years in prison

MEXICO CITY — Infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero walked free Friday after 28 years in prison when a court overturned his 40-year sentence for the 1985 kidnap and killing of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent, a brutal murder that marked a low point in U.S.-Mexico relations.

The court ruled that Caro Quintero was improperly tried in a federal court for a crime that should have been treated as a state offense. Caro Quintero still faces active charges in the United States and Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said it did not know if there was a current extradition request.

EAST HAVEN, Conn. — A small plane crashed in a working-class neighborhood near an airport on Friday and engulfed two houses in flames, likely killing four to six people, authorities said.

The multi-engine, propeller-driven plane struck the small homes a few blocks from Tweed New Haven Airport as it went in for a landing.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Robert Gretz said Friday night there were casualty reports of two or three people in the plane and two or three on the ground. He said local and state authorities were at the scene looking for victims.

NEW YORK — A 22-year-old Bangladeshi man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday for plotting to set off a bomb outside the Federal Reserve building last year in Manhattan.

In federal court in Brooklyn, District Court Judge Carol Amon said she believed Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis was remorseful about the horrific explosion he wanted to create to kill Americans and change U.S. policy.

10 killed in attack at Pakistan mosque

ISLAMABAD — Gunmen on Friday killed at least 10 people and wounded 30 outside a mosque in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s western Baluchistan province.

It was not immediately clear whether the danger facing the consulate was linked to a broader advisory about a possible al-Qaida attack, which prompted Washington to temporarily close more than 20 diplomatic facilities.

The target of Friday’s attack was allegedly Ali Madad Jatak, a former provincial minister, who escaped unharmed.

No group has taken immediate responsibility.
